Soap Box (2008)
The Soap Box project consists of a street-based newsbox, featuring an electronic newspaper to which public users can contribute content (headlines, photos) in real-time via their mobile devices. The traditional newspaper is an often biased medium, whose content is shaped largely by the political interests of its publishers. Soap Box seeks to provide a more democratic, technology-mediated platform for displaying ‘the news’, enabling members of the community to make their voices heard, and encouraging citizen journalism and activism. Soap Box was first exhibited at Science Rendezvous (2007), and has been subsequently shown at Digifest (2008), the Canadian Innovation Exchange (2008), and the Ontario Centers of Excellence Discovery Conference (2009).
